Characters / The Cabins in the Marsh
The smell of rain is actually a compound in the soil made by bacteria. Animals that can "smell water" are actually smelling this compound; humans are very sensitive to it as well. And the smell of metal is not from the metal itself, but from aldehydes made when the metal catalyzes a reaction between the oils in our skin and the oxygen in the air. But both water smell and metal smell are earthy aromas, and earthy notes are closely related to musty and green notes. Here in the marsh we find them all in one place.
