This website maintains a database of olfactory receptors, odorants, and empirical receptor-ligand pairs with data about agonist and antagonist activity. We seek to understand, from a biomolecular approach, the mappings between receptor responses to odorants and each odorant's odor perceptual qualities. Our goal is to one day be able to describe any odor in terms of its receptor activation pattern and which parts of that pattern produce which perceptual components of that specific aroma, and to be able to predict a given compound's odor by predicting its activity for all olfactory receptors. We consider "primary odors" to be all perceptually indivisible components that form part of the whole sensation of an odor.
